The last two candelabras I’ve made slumped so badly in the kiln as to be serious fire hazards I pretty much gave up on making them (to the chagrin of my beloved @vessel_shop who have asked me for more several times 😬)
But then I use one and I remember how great they are and what a vibe it is and I really hope I can find some tenacity within me to try to make another one again soon 🔥

I think the mark of a good potter is in their handles.
ngl my handles are pretty average. They don’t seem to fall off which I guess is the important thing but I am trying to focus on having nicer, more refined handles in my work. Normally I am just trying to get handles on as quickly as possible and just use coils. Pulled handles like these take quite a bit longer — is it worth it? In terms of ROI for my time probably not, but maybe in terms of satisfaction with my work?
Here is a different style of handle in my ‘Te-Whanganui-a-Tara combo’ glaze inspired by our very special harbour. These are now available at the National Library gift shop along with a bunch of other pieces in the same glaze colourway 😎

Anyway watch this space for hopefully more refined handles being part of my regular work as I aim to up my handle game this year 🤞

I support the schools strike for climate but I’m pretty jaded about how little govts are doing so I’ll just be here lighting a candle trying to soothe my anxiety about the imminent ecological collapse

These are made with beeswax from BOP that I hand pour and don’t add any fragrance because the beeswax is so nice on its own.

I made a few of these ‘Newtown - it’s a bit shit’ mugs thinking they would be appropriate to bring to Newtown Festival this Sunday where I was planning to be at @veronicadesignlife
… until I realised I double booked myself! Not only do I have a lesson booked for Sunday morning, Toi Whakaari and New Zealand School of Dance are hosting an open day at 11 Hutchison Rd in Newtown for their 25th anniversary. So instead of slanging pottery I will be wearing my other hat - art library & research manager at Nola Millar Library where we will be open to the public!
Come visit me at Toi Whakaari and check out some performances by NZSD students and exhibitions of Toi Whakaari student work throughout the day. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 2 schools moving into the old showgrounds buildings in Newtown and they have a series of events planned to mark the anniversary. It’s a pretty special place and I feel very lucky to work surrounded by art & creativity.
But I know you guys are here for the pottery, not so much my thoughts on literacy and learning! So in lieu of an in-person market I have updated my online shop with a few bits & pieces that are ready to ship! I do also have a lot of one-off pieces that I haven’t listed online so hopefully I will get the chance to rehome those soon! Sadly I will be overseas for Aro Fair so hopefully catch me this autumn/winter in person around Pōneke with all my pots. The electrician quotes for getting my kiln wired up in my new shed are a little scary so I need to get my hustle on!! I’m thinking of offering kiln firing classes over winter… so watch this space if you are keen to learn to fire your own work!

I made a shed! It’s a miracle!
Wow I can’t believe I took what was an overgrown slab of slanted concrete and turned it into a shed all by myself*!

It was very hard building on such a steep section and if I never have to rivet another thing for the rest of my life I would be ok with that. But I learnt a lot and I am so proud of myself for getting this done!

It was so special to have a pīwakawaka visitor checking in on my progress regularly.

I can’t wait to get the power set up and my kiln installed!

*Thanks to my advisor Jon Terry for helping me cut piles and Erika for her help!
And of course huge thanks to my beloved for not helping (except to lift the roof on) so I could have the satisfaction of doing it all myself (and all his guidance and moral support). And everyone for encouraging/supporting me and believing in me!

All up I spent about $4k on this 8m3 shed from Garden Master NZ😅

Getting this built has been my main focus for 2023 so far and now I am ready to start on more exciting stuff like @newtownfestnz next weekend! ❤️

Buying useless shit with aspirational quotes on it won’t fix your problems!!

I enjoyed coming up with ideas for the most ridiculous candles I could think of as satire of the industrial complex that is selling people shit they think will help them be better people.

These are filled with 100% beeswax and you can use the pots as cups, bowls, wine glasses, whatever when you have burnt the candle! I only have these 2 atm but more coming soon! HMU if you want one - $30 each!

I also enjoyed teaching myself how to make beeswax candles and I now have an arrangement to swap beeswax for candles with some lovely ladies at a Bay of Plenty apiary! How cool is that?

This sweet little bumble bee even came to check it out while I was taking photos. 🐝
Composting is so easy and better than landfill, I can’t understand why everyone doesn’t do it 🤷🏼‍♀️
Speaking of elevation, this raised compost bin is really great! It was impossible to keep rodents out of our old bin but they are not a problem with this one!

Basically I’m back in production though on a slightly limited basis and am hoping to have a shop update before Christmas! I am also planning to be at @veronicadesignlife for the Dom Polski Christmas festival on 19 Nov so if you are Pōneke based don’t miss the chance to come see cute af little Polish children folk dancing and some sweet klezmer bands! ngl I was pretty bummed out when both the studios I was looking at moving into fell through the week before my home & studio was scheduled to be demolished. I panicked and tried to find something else but it was so last minute I felt like I had no choice but to just move all my gear up to my new house and try to make it work.
Now I’m realising that Holloway rd is pretty much the most magical spot in central Wellington and despite the hundred million steps having a sunny cottage garden studio nestled between the town belt and Zealandia is basically my dream come true. It’s the same postcode as our old place but a completely different world!
I look forward to seeing how this new environment affects my work and how the studio evolves. It’s pretty amazing to finally have the stability and security of owning property and being able to invest time and money into creating a long term space. But at the same time I hate that capitalism and private land ownership has made the journey here so hard, and still impossible for many people. So here I am, both joyful and angry at the same time… just like my pottery 🥳😂🌈❤️

As great as it would be to have a cute studio with a lil gallery/shop and space to teach paying commercial rent would require serious hustling, and after the last few years of hard out hustling I needed to slow down for a minute! The new space is about 1/4th the size of the old one but it is all mine and I don’t have to worry about getting kicked out by a property developer landlord!

Huge thanks to @erikagrantastrologer for helping me navigate tricky life decisions and @gerarddombroski for making space for my kiln in this workshop. After my first attempt several years ago that ripped out huge chunks of my hair I have been thinking about trying to make another comb… thanks to one of the students at Toi Whakaari for putting the idea in my head again recently to revisit this type of object. This version is better but still not very practical. Another thing on my list to try again in the future!
